The last time Hole were Hole (and possibly the last time Courtney Love was on the bearable side of insane, but I don’t want to write her off completely for the duration of her future) was “Malibu.”

I can barely stand to watch the video though. It makes me want to shake both Courtney and Melissa Auf der Maur and yell at them that they’re pretty, you don’t have to go overboard with it or anything.

The song though. I always loved the song. Most of Celebrity Skin is really great and like having a open, raw wound. There’s this interview with Eleanor Friedberger in September’s Elle where she explains her fashion evolution. She says something to the effect that being in a band is like being part of a gang, so when she was in the Fiery Furnaces she dressed in pants to fit in with the guys in that band. Now that she’s on her own she feels like she can do the girl on stage in a dress thing. 

This is what’s so great and cool to me about a girl band (or in this case, a band that’s mostly girls): the dynamics of the gang. Oh, just walking through a bunch of burning palm trees in sheer dresses. It’s how we do in this band.
